Audio tour, interpretive panels to be part of Tower visits<\/strong> VANKLEEK HILL \u2013 <\/strong>As construction on the Higginson Tower nears completion, Ruth Martin has been working on a slightly different aspect of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Martin has been collecting information from print sources and first-hand interviews in the hopes of creating an enjoyable account of the history of the Higginson Tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Along the way, she\u2019s learned a few things about the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Primarily, she discovered that Thomas Higginson originally built the tower with an intended use as a grist mill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn the early beginnings of Vankleek Hill, that was an important thing because it (the town) was starting to evolve into the hub of the agricultural community,\u201d Martin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet, the fixed design had a flaw \u2013 the tower faced east and Martin said there was never enough wind to turn the blades \u2013 and the tower soon fell into disuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt was probably used for storage then,\u201d Martin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She then learned that Thomas Higginson\u2019s son William was the one who turned it into an observatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHe built extra platforms inside and purchased a telescope from Montreal,\u201d she said. \u201cHe would invite the high school students over to take an astronomy class.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, some people, Martin learned, thought it was the father who turned the mill into an observatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut it was William,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re both called Lieutenant-Colonel Higginson and I think that\u2019s where the confusion is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nevertheless, according to Martin\u2019s research, both Higginsons did a lot for the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWilliam . . . had to do with the introduction of electricity and donated land for the train station,\u201d she said. \u201cThomas donated land for the Anglican church.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thomas also built the Higginson house, which is now used as Arbor Gallery, over a period of seven years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All this, Martin said, she learned from various local books, articles from the National Archives and online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Online, she learned about the Fenian Raids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAt one point, the Higginsons thought they\u2019d use it as a lookout tower during the Fenian Raids,\u201d Martin said. \u201cBut they (the Fenians) never got this far.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Fenians were Irish nationalists who were hoping to use Canada as a bargaining chip against Britain for the liberation of Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This information is being compiled into a booklet and will be used on interpretive panels, one outside and three inside the tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The results of an investigative archaeological dig, conducted in May 2006 before restoration work began, are also going to be included as exhibits in display cases inside the tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Martin recently interviewed four townspeople about their memories of the tower, including Champlain Township Mayor Gary Barton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201c(He) used to go insode, and by that time there were a number of steps missing and you\u2019d jump two or three steps up to the next one, and he knew he wasn\u2019t supposed to be there,\u201d Martin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAs a child, you don\u2019t think about things not being safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thelma MacCaskill was also interviewed by Martin, and she recounted re-enacting fairytales with friends during her childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cShe talked about how much fun it was,\u201d Martin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The interviews are going to be part of an audio tour when the tower is open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An audio script with fictional historical re-enactments using with local residents playing the roles of historical characters is also in the works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Martin has been hard at work for about two weeks and her deadline is fast approaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s the end of the month,\u201d she said, \u201cbut I\u2019ve more or less got it together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The interpretive program is being developed thanks to a $9,900 Local Initiative grant received from the Prescott-Russell Community Development Corporation (Community Futures).<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Higginson Tower Committee has raised about $101,000 for restoration of the 175-year-old Higginson Tower and has received about $80,000 in funding from various sources, including the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Prescott-Russell Community Development Corporation (Community Futures) and Champlain Township. Many \u201cin-kind\u201d services have helped to move the project forward since fundraising began in earnest in February 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Embossed tin for the wooden portion of the tower is expected next week; installation of the tin should begin shortly.
